The Ashley Madison user information data leak calls into question the question of ethics; the ethics of the hackers (moral vigilantism) and …the ethics of data journalism.

The ‘public’ availability offered by the mass data breach, means that there are a lot of ethical dilemmas journalists face in shaping the narratives around the data and how people respond to it.


More than 30 gigabytes of raw, unfiltered data was dumped, and many media organisations and websites have hopped on board to transform this into manageable stats and infographics.

Because the general public can draw misguided conclusions from the misrepresentations provided by such visual data interpretations, our group wanted to explore the ethics behind this sort of ‘data journalism’ (as one of our potential angles!).
